Each year, the Doernbecher Freestyle serves as a platform for six young warriors from the hospital wards to the design studios of Nike, allowing them to transpose their life stories, dreams, and struggles onto iconic Nike silhouettes. The program transcends the norms of sneaker culture, embedding profound narratives into each stitch, color, and material, transforming footwear into canvases of courage.
The 2024 collection heralds the return of the Air Jordan 3, a silhouette with a storied past within the Doernbecher Freestyle realm. Designed by Hugo Covarrubias Molina, it's a homage to diversity and individuality, drawing cues from the Seattle Seahawks and echoing Hugo's powerful message: "It's okay to be different."

Another touching story is woven by 8-year-old Hailey Leyva, who reimagines the Air Max 1. Surviving five heart surgeries, Leyva's rendition of the sneaker symbolizes her journey, with heart motifs and echoes of her love for rainbows and ice cream. Similarly, each designer, whether it's Macey Bodily's floral tribute to survival on the Dunk High or Sydney Little's hand-drawn art on the Cortez, brings a unique, poignant narrative.

More than a sneaker release, the Doernbecher Freestyle XIX collection is a narrative of triumph, adversity, and the therapeutic power of art and expression. Each pair serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit of these young individuals, standing as symbols of hope, strength, and the sheer will to keep fighting.
In addition to the footwear, the collection extends to a line of apparel and accessories, each item reverberating with the personal tales of its young designer. Slated for a December release, the collection isn't just a purchase but a contribution, as all proceeds advance the life-saving efforts at Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
This initiative by Nike stands as a reminder that every stride taken in these shoes supports a heartbeat, funds a treatment, and nurtures a dream, encapsulating the true essence of the Doernbecher Freestyle program.
The entire collection will release on Nike.com on Decmeber 2nd, 2023.
