In recent years, Nike, Inc. has honored its unofficial alignment with some of the biggest cultural moments in music. With recent releases like the “Bronx Origins” Air Force 1, the “Mix CD” Foamposite Ones, and the “Cleveland Rocks” Blazer Mid, the Swoosh has begun to recognize the role it’s played in the music scene. Furthering that acknowledgment, Nike will be preparing a special collection dubbed “Nike Classics,” which honors the 50th anniversary of the Hip Hop movement.
Inclusive of the Air Force 1 Low, Nike Blazer Mid, and this Nike Dunk High, the collection shares a few key traits: Parental Advisory-inspired “Nike Classics” insoles, cassette motifs at the tongue, and silver-grey detail that replicates worn-out tape; technology of last century.
For the pack’s Dunk High, we see a grey leather upper paired with overlays of black, both featuring a heavily-tumbled finish. The worn-look tape aesthetic is plastered onto the Swoosh overlays, with a classic white and black sole unit resting underfoot to complete the design.
The birth of hip hop is believed to date back to Aug. 11, 1973, when DJ Kool Herc, real name Clive Campbell, and his friend hosted a back-to-school party in Bronx, New York. Eighteen-year-old Campbell and his friend Coke La Rock are often referred to as the fathers of hip-hop.
