Nike will welcome the 2023 Lunar New Year with a smorgasbord of themed sneakers, from colorful creations that celebrate the festival’s vibrant fireworks and traditional prints, to direct nods to the zodiac animal of the impending year, the rabbit. Last seen in 2011, the bunny graced classics like the Air Jordan 7 and the Air Force 1 in limited quantities. For 2023’s celebration of the leporids, the Swoosh has called upon the model of the moment, with the Nike Dunk Low “Year of the Rabbit” to headline a collection of related colorways — this being the third in a series of hare-themed Dunk Lows for the special occasion.

Though the other pairs have hinted at its inspiration, this White/Red/Royal colorway is a direct nod to the aforementioned Air Force 1 (pictured below) Like the original 2011 release, this 2023 Dunk Low rocks out with neutral suede uppers white leather overlays, and alternating red and royal chenille Swooshes. It duplicates the blue liners, hosts one-for-one red chenille character tongue tags (“Rabbit” in Chinese), and both lateral heel and insole motifs identical to those seen on 2011’s regional AF-1 release. Underfoot is much the same story, with milky-translucent outsoles resting underfoot — complete with red thread to mirror the Air Force 1’s midsole paintwork. Then, Nike makes a new addition only visible under the outsole, with 2011/2023 further cementing the bond between the two pairs.

The 2011 Nike Air Force 1 Low “Year of the Rabbit” serves as a direct inspiration for the 2023 Nike Dunk Low.
