The Nike LeBron 17 “College Navy” Goes Old-School with Gum Soles

Nike’s LeBron lineage has absolutely nailed down inspired releases over the past few years, with thematical takes appearing more often than not in recent times. A trio Space Jam drops, a Friday the 13th “James Gang” and an Infrared Air Jordan 6 edition have surfaced int he past two months alone — and now there’s another. This Nike LeBron 17 “College Navy” harkens back to the late-’70s/early ’80s when Nike introduced its circular ‘Pinwheel’ logo. The symmetrical spherical logo was specially developed for use on apparel, as the Swoosh was thought to look unbalanced on clothing.

The Nike LeBron 17 “College Navy” not only utilizes the motif (a modernized one, nonetheless) but it also pulls in a few other period-specific features. Notably, the navy, white and gum palate is a perfect illustration of footwear preferences of the period, especially when it came to bold white Swoosh branding. Insoles also feature a psychedelic tie-dye print, a reference to the liberating time of the 70s — which is also fitting for sneakers, who, around the same time, made the transition from a runner’s requirement to a staple fashion item. The red, white and blue of the print also feature on the aforementioned Pinwheel logo that sits prominently on the forefoot, as well as the tongue’s King James logo and throughout the rear’s Knitposite panels.
