1971’s infamous Porsche Le Mans 917/20 “Pink Pig” is — pardon the pun — served up as Nike SB‘s newest creation, of what appears to be an impending motorsport-themed collection for the Swoosh’s skateboard division. The Nike SB Dunk Low “Pink Pig” honors the incredibly polarizing car delivered by Porsche designer Anatole Lapine, who labeled each of the body parts according to the butcher-style cuts. Porsche caused a sensation at Le Mans 1971 with the Pink Pig. It was the fastest car during the pre-race qualification session, although it was totally untested. During the main race, with the car running in fifth position, an untimely accident ended the short-lived legend:
Though its existence was only brief, it has lived on in racing folklore for almost four decades, and in 2021, for the car’s 40th anniversary, Nike SB will be tributing the racer with a special-edition sneaker release. The pair adopts a simple, tonal pink coloring and little in the way of markings, though its use of contrast red stitching channels the aforementioned butcher-styled cuts seen on the Duco. Branding at the tongue, sock liner, and heel tab all follow suit, with the pair completed by a simple black and white sole unit — a reference to the car’s signature #23 detail.
