Nike unveil their React Element 87

Chunky love.

Nike have just officially unveiled their React Element 87, along with release details for the first four colorways.

Equipped with a series of pressure maps and a drill, designers entered full discovery mode. They got the foam. They drilled holes. They found, through trial and error, which depths and densities accomplished comfort goals. Then, they pivoted.

“At first, the whole process was one of those back-to-basics type of things,” explains Darryl Matthews, the Footwear Design Lead for NSW Innovation. “But then we took what we’d learned and applied it through computational design scripts. That’s when things really started clicking.”

While the React Element 87 includes modern features from its outsole to the translucent textile upper, the shoe also borrows design DNA from the Nike Internationalist from the ’80s, which you can spot on the eyelets and heel clip.

Nike’s four debut React Element 87s release on June 21st via SNKRS in Asia, Latin America and Greater China, SNEAKRS in Europe and at select retailers. A North America release will take place on July 13th via SNKRS, select retailers and Nike.com.
