Nike Racing is complementing its recent news of the Alphafly 4 with two surprise projects on the same mission of helping runners dominate the marathon distance: Apex, which is the brand's most-advanced leap in raceday footwear, and Swooshfly, a $145 racer built to accommodate a wide range of athletes ready to tackle 26.2 miles.
Nike Swooshfly is expected to launch first in China, the region pivotal to its development, come February 2027 before allowing runners looking at a capable, budget-friendly marathon racer to try out the model at a later date.
"We set out to create an inclusive marathon racer with similar performance to our elite super shoes, and at half the price," said Jean Peng, Principal Product Engineer at Nike, in a Making It story about Swooshfly.
The decision to build and launch the $145 racer is rooted in the brand's acknowledgment that different levels of athletes have different needs which must be catered to with carefully-considered innovation.
Design Breakdown: Nike Swooshfly
Visually, Swooshfly looks like a combination of the Vaporfly 4, Pegasus Plus 2, and Ultrafly trail racer, but it's its own thing.
At its core, Nike Swooshfly aims to make "super shoes" (e.g. Alphafly 4, Nike Apex, Adizero Adios Pro 5) more approachable to more people—all while ensuring comfort, light weight, and a sense of speed.
To this end, Swooshfly's technical breakdown consists of:
- SkyX Foam: An all-new supercritical, beaded foam specifically engineered to provide a responsive, cushioned, and stable ride; additional supercritical foam sockliner.
- Vaporweave Upper: Translucent woven material that works in-tandem with a mid-foot band, race-specific laces, structured heel counter & padding throughout to deliver protection, comfort & support with every step.
- Adaptive Carbon Fiber Flyplate: Five-layer stiffening element that increases flexibility & stability compared to the eight-layer Flyplate in the Alphafly 4.
- GOATEK Dual-Rubber Outsole: Proprietary rubber tread solution that ensures optimal grip while shaving weight.
The all-new SkyX foam and tailored Flyplate in the Swooshfly come together to deliver up to 16% more energy return than the Vaporfly 4 in a Men's U.S. size 10.
Nike's Swooshfly weighs approximately 6.98 ounces (198 grams) in a Men's U.S. size 8.5.
According to Bret Schoolmeester, Vice President of Nike Running Footwear, the responsive, lightweight, and more-affordable-than-ZoomX-SkyX foam is coming to Nike ACG, Nike Training, and Nike Mind categories.
All in all, Swooshfly took roughly one year to complete—about half the time typically required to launch a new-to-market model.
Release Date & Colorways
The Swooshfly marathon racer makes its Nike.com debut in the first-half of 2027—first in China and then globally. The accessible raceday silhouette is priced at $145; by comparison, Apex and Alphafly4 have respective MSRPs of $350 and $280.
The debut colorway is the ever-popular "Proto" style that features an off white base and vibrant orange accents.
