With Alphafly 4, Nike Aims to Create More Marathon Finishers

"This is the biggest improvement in the history of the Alphafly franchise," expressed Bret Schoolmeester, Vice President of Nike Running Footwear, during a virtual media briefing for the Nike Alphafly 4, the brand's newest marathon racing shoe.

The latest addition to the Swoosh's road running lineup has been more than three years in the making—prototypes of the Alphafly 3 began popping up as early as Spring 2023 and finally went on sale in January 2024. According to Schoolmeester, there's a good reason why the Oregon-based sportswear institution made eager Alphafly fans wait so long: "[T]he gap between the Alphafly 3 and Alphafly 4 was longer than traditional, and that really was because we felt like we had much bigger improvements left to be made, and didn't want to rush a product to market that we didn't feel was maxmized to the potential we can serve athletes with."

How exactly does Nike want to serve runners with the Alphafly 4?

Whereas the earliest version of the project that's become known as "Nike Alphafly" was fine-tuned to help elite athletes like Eliud Kipchoge overcome the 2-hour marathon barrier, the newest Alphafly model has been rebuilt from the ground up to serve a wider array of runners as they tackle the marathon distance.

Conner Mantz, Jacob Kiplimo, and Addisu Gobena have demonstrated that the Alphafly 4 is still the Swoosh's most capable racer across 26.2 miles in setting national, distance, and course records in prototypes of the shoe, but the brand was intentional in making its Alphafly experience the most accessible it's been since disrupting the racing industry between October 2019 and July 2020.

Design Breakdown: Alphafly 4

Visually, the Alphafly 4 isn't too dissimilar from its immediate predecessor, but even a quick glance reveals notable differences between it and the three previous Alphafly designs.

"Could we create a ride that felt softer and quieter underfoot? Smoother through transitions of [an athlete's] stride? More stable where and then they need it? More supportive for a range of athlete body types, and as fatigue increases? And...at its core, fast and efficient across a range of marathon paces," shared Emily Farina, Senior Principal, Running Footwear, Nike Sport Research Lab (NSRL), when recalling the vision behind the Alphafly 4.

Over three years, the design team tasked with making the best Nike Alphafly silhouette to date incorporated the following tech specs into the new marathon racer:

• Improved Atomknit 2.0 Upper: Offers a more precise fit through zoned mid-foot cables, an integrated heel unit & a molded sock-liner for added security in every stride.
• ZoomX LT Foam: An all-new, lighter edition of Nike's Pebax foam, coming in at 17% lighter while offering 8% more energy return; layered above & below the carbon fiber Flyplate, combining with standard ZoomX foam to create a complete cushioning system specifically designed for long-distance racing.
• Wider Carbon Fiber Flyplate: Nike's industry-disrupting stiffening element maintains its signature propulsive scoop, but its base had been made wider to help with stability & stride transition.
• Dual Forefoot RF Air Zoom Units: Updated to be 30% lighter than the airbags in the Alphafly 3 thanks to the use of Radio Frequency (RF) Air instead of Thermoform Air; new manufacturing process saves weight & creates softer Air Zoom units by abandoning old heat-requiring process to weld & shape airbags; made quieter.
• Lightweight Fast Shot Outsole: Virtually the same as on the Alphafly 3, although tread across the forefoot is reworked to shave weight.

Nike's Alphafly 4 weighs approximately 6.63 ounces (188 grams) in a Men's U.S. size 8.5. The shoe has an 8 millimeter heel-to-toe drop.

Hundreds of different athletes—including women participating in Nike’s Project Dreamweaver—tested out the new Alphafly across the world, putting the long-anticipated racer through the paces to create what the brand is considering its best Alphafly yet.

Release Date & Colorways

The Alphafly 4 will see an early, limited launch through Nike.com today, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m. EDT. A wider global release takes place on Thursday, Oct. 29, via Nike channels and select shops. Pricing has been set at $280.

The debut colorway is a "Sea Glass/Laser Crimson/Phantom/Burgundy Ash" pair and arrives in sizing for Men and Women. Additional color schemes are expected over the next year. Nike Athletes competing in the World Athletics Road Running Championships Copenhagen 26 this weekend could preview new styles of the marathon racer.
