The Nike LeBron 16 Low “Safari” is an Official atmos Collaboration
These are literally Wild!
Although his popularity is at it’s highest levels, LeBron Jame’s signature sneaker line had suffered a blow in recent years. Poor designs and increasing price points sent keen hoopers in the direction of equally appealing and cheaper options like the Kyrie, Curry or PG lines. 2018 saw the LeBron series restore some clout, thanks to some long-awaited retro releases. That, along with recreation is playing a huge part in the resurgence of his signature line. Recreations featured in Nike’s #LeBronWatch, like the Diamond Trainer and the Neon Air Max 95, were well received by fans — new and old — of the signature line.
Continuing that theme is another reimagined classic, — one of Nike’s most beloved collaborations in history — which in itself is inspired by an even older sneaker. First dropping in 2003, atmos’ Air Max 1 “Safari” merges its way onto the LeBron 16 Low, even ditching the Battleknit uppers for one that replicates that of the Air Max collaboration.
Like the OG Nike Safari, This upcoming release utilizes the safari-textured pattern on the mudguard with the earthy brown and tan hues on the suede upper, while the gum sole truly nods to the ’03 effort from atmos. A release date has just been confirmed for March 2nd, with pairs to hit the select retailers below.
Update 02.24,19 // Nike has officially confirmed that this is indeed an atmos collaboration, with their website stating: “2003 was a banner year in sport and sneaker culture. LeBron James was drafted in ‘03, and in that same year, some of the best colorways and collaborations hit shelves and stormed stockrooms, including one of the greatest Air Max 1 designs of all time, the atmos x Air Max 1 ‘Safari’. Japanese sneaker community staple atmos partnered with Nike to release a shoe honoring the OG Air Safari and the OG Air Max 1, and now King James is partnering with atmos to pay tribute to the ’03 grail. The LeBron 16 Low x atmos ‘Safari’ sports the same mini Swoosh found on the toe box of the Air Max 1, as well as a gum outsole, premium materials, and color-blocking pulled straight from the original.”
