Originally designed for the fateful 1972 Olympics in Munich, the adidas SL 72 was introduced as a lightweight running sneaker and was the first release of the SL (Super Light) family. It was so successful on the track, that it was followed up by the SL 76 and SL 80 years later. Around the same time, sneakers had started to work their way into everyday wear, and it didn’t take long for the casual crowd to adopt the trainer.
47 years on, the sneaker is still considered a staple by Trefoil fanatics the world over — and it returns again in almost OG form. Pictured below is an original pair from 1972 (peep that $35 price tag, tho 🤯) It was later retooled to optimal comfort (pictured further below) with adjustments to the cushioning system, a more streamlined aesthetic, with blue lacestay overlays and blue rubber toecaps/midsoles added for visual appeal:
This year’s retro arrives more in-line with the retooled version above, but it does arrive sans the AL 72 gold foil hit on the mid panel. Apart from that, this is as close to the OG as you’re going to get for a little while, so adi fans, gear up for its release on December 1st, 2019, with stores like SNS and 43einhalbdropping pairs that evening (Eastern Time)
