Adidas Originals' popular SL 72 debuted in the early 1970s as one of the brand's premier sports models. In the last handful of years, the Super Light silhouette has taken on a new life as fashionable folks' go-to sneaker of choice, leading the Three Stripes to reimagine it in a plethora of color schemes. For its latest ensemble, the pair has taken on a compelling "Yellow/Core Black" look reminiscent of the footwear worn by Uma Thurman's character in Kill Bill: Volume 1.
Quentin Tarantino's beloved film from 2003 featured the Onitsuka Tiger Tai Chi—not the Mexico 66™—as part of its iconic wardrobe. The bee-reminiscent yellow-and-black style paid homage to a similar pair worn by Bruce Lee in the 1978 film, Game of Death. His low-top trainer and matching jumpsuit and nunchaku not only inspired Thurman's look, but also a number of sneaker releases from different brands over the last two decades. Adidas' latest SL 72 might not be directly inspired by Lee's ensemble, but the similarity is worth noting.
For starters, the model is not too different from Onitsuka Tiger's designs from the mid-1960s. The Super Light option is more robust than the Tai Chi and Mexico 66, but wouldn't look out of place in Kill Bill. The mix of nylon, suede, and leather materials across the upper work well with the "Yellow/Core Black" color scheme. Profile 3-Stripes take on the latter tone, just as the Achilles' panel and laces do. Their surroundings are left to indulge in the punchy titular hue. Underfoot, the color story stays the same, with the low-profile EVA midsole boasting a bold makeover. The classic, serrated rubber outsole rounds out the style in a pitch-dark tone.
Firm Adidas.com release details haven't been disclosed by the brand as of yet, but pairs of the two-tone SL 72 should land before September arrives. Expect a price tag of $100 for the Kill Bill-appropriate sneaker.
