James Whitner’s continued mission to amplify underrepresented voices in art and culture is taking another step forward with the launch of 38a’s second gallery in Charlotte. As part of this expansion, the Whitaker Group partnered with Adidas to release a special Superstar sneaker tied to their multi-city exhibit, Queens & Kings: A Tale of Two Cities.
The sneaker's design immediately draws influence from playing cards, a nod to the gallery’s theme. The black and white Adidas Superstar features serif “Q” and “K” lettering on the left and right backtabs, respectively. Additionally, card-inspired insoles and a card-shaped hangtag further emphasize the connection to the theme. The phrase “To The Queens + Kings” is subtly embedded into the inner tongue, with the “+” ingeniously woven into the blank space.
Crafted with pebbled leather sidewalls and thick, Lanvin-style herringbone laces, the sneakers feature 38a’s logo on the tongue, making this release as much about the collaboration as the cause.
This news follows earlier rumors of a multi-pair partnership between The Whitaker Group and Adidas from earlier this year. For a brand forever associated with Nike and Jordan Brand collaborations, it's a true reflection of the market's shift in allegiance.
The Queens & Kings exhibit will be held in Charlotte from November 15th to December 6th, followed by a Pittsburgh showcase from December 13th to December 30th.
