Designer Willy Chavarria has officially revealed a new footwear silhouette—the Chavarria Oaxaca Slip-On—as part of his ongoing collaboration with adidas Originals. The unveiling took place during a special panel hosted by adidas Originals at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, offering a unique platform to explore the fusion of cultural heritage and contemporary design.
The panel, which featured adidas Archival Specialist Sandra Trapp, Originals Design Director Rafael Mayorga, and Director of Storytelling Valentina Benitez Castellanos, served as the backdrop for the reveal. Chavarria shared the inspiration behind the design, citing the traditional Mexican huarache as the foundation for the Oaxaca Slip-On. A mainstay in Chicano culture and streetwear, the huarache has been reimagined through Chavarria’s bold design language, merging artisanal roots with modern street aesthetics.
The new model boasts a premium leather upper intricately woven in huarache style and sits atop a thick, trail-inspired outsole. The exaggerated sneaker sole offers both a visual edge and functional grip, reinforcing the silhouette’s street-ready appeal while paying homage to its heritage roots.
This event was part of adidas Originals’ broader initiative in Puerto Rico, spotlighting the adidas para Bad Bunny archive and its impact on Latin American identity and creativity. The discussion explored how honoring the past allows for deeper, more intentional design outcomes—something Chavarria’s Oaxaca Slip-On embodies with clarity.
