While Nike and adidas continue to dominate the wider sneaker conversation, New Balance has been quietly working in its own lane, building out one of the most consistent lifestyle catalogs in footwear. The brand’s Made in USA line remains a major part of that push, and the latest New Balance 990v4 “Pumpernickel” shows exactly why the Boston-based imprint still has a firm grip on premium everyday sneakers.
The New Balance 990v4 “Pumpernickel” takes a warm, dessert-like approach to the familiar runner, pairing rich brown suede overlays with pale mesh underlays and soft "Pink Chalk" trim throughout the upper. The result lands somewhere between earthy and playful, with the brown-heavy base giving the pair its grounded feel while the pink paneling adds a lighter seasonal touch.
Yellow accents bring the “Pumpernickel” palette together, appearing around the oversized “N” logo and at the heel clip, giving the shoe a subtle banana-split feel without pushing the colorway too far into novelty territory. A brown ENCAP midsole and matching outsole complete the build, keeping the lower half fully tied into the upper’s darker tones.

As expected from a Made in USA 990v4, the shape and material mix do most of the work. Suede, mesh, leather, and layered paneling all sit within the model’s familiar technical structure, giving the colorway enough detail up close while still feeling easy to wear from a distance. It is another reminder that New Balance does not need to chase the loudest moment in sneakers to stay relevant.
The New Balance 990v4 “Pumpernickel” is expected to release as part of the brand’s Summer/Fall 2026 lineup. Further release details should arrive soon.
