25 years ago, Christian Tresser’s Air Max masterpiece was born. The sneaker’s radical combination of reflective overlays, curved lines, and metallic silver finishes anchored around the brand’s biggest Air bubble yet, was as avant grade as it got. Like many of Nike’s designs of the era, the shoe was inspired by industrial design, with Japanese bullet train influence so prevalent that its debut colorway quickly became known as the Silver Bullet. The silhouette’s industrial beginnings has led to several heavy-duty informed releases, with its newest iteration appearing here today.
Though this new Air Max 97 “Rubberized” keeps Tresser’s original design lines intact, it brings a whole new feel of high-speed movement for the silhouette. Here, the mudguard overlays feature warped ridging, with thick and thin waves to its superior — all delivered in a rubberized format. The same can be said for the tongue overlays and midfoot Swoosh, all of which are delivered in alternating black and anthracite hues. All of the above rests atop an olive mesh upper, with white midsoles, olive Air supports, and anthracite rubber outsoles completing the design.
