Lil’ Penny is Back on the Nike Air Max Penny 1 “House Party”
Bruh — Lil’ Penny was Lit!
Man, sports endorsements in the 90s were wild. If you’re old enough to remember, Lil Penny was one of the best fictional characters created to help Penny push his sneakers — coming in third to Mike’s Mars Blackmon Spike Lee and the unforgettable Bugs Bunny.
The character was created to help a less-than-impressive on-screen Anfernee Hardaway become more marketable. Hell, it worked for Mike who was a stunned mullet in front of the camera when he first entered the world of endorsements, and it sure worked for Penny, too. The campaigns were effective on so many levels, but thanks should go out in huge part to Chris Rock who voiced the larger than life, but smaller than ever character.
One of the most memorable ads from the series was from 1996, called “House Party” (below), where Anfernee calls up Lil’ Penny to find him, well, hosting a house party. The miniature man is decked out in a Hefner-like robe with an accompanying gold neckerchief. Which is where this sneaker gets it’s inspiration.
