    Wild child.

It was Sergio Lozano, designer of the Air Max 95, who played the pivotal role in the shoe’s hollowed-out rear design. The Shox system — the first of its kind — was inspired by Formula 1 car suspension systems, designed to absorb heel impact before a popping spring back, allowing the wearer to channel additional power into their next stride.

At the time, Nike described the development as “revolutionary.” Nike went H.A.M. on the rollout and the marketing, with Superstar hooper Vince Carter debuting the boing at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. And then there was that dunk. It was a marketing dream come true: a wild design paired with an equally out-there dunk, both offering something the world had never seen before.

Then there’s Neymar. A different kind of crazy, granted: A guy who throws equally wild New Year’s Eve parties, and is known for flashes of flamboyance on and off the pitch. So when the Shox resurfaced late last year, who better to collaborate with than Nike/Jordan’s signature soccer athlete? And yes, he brought some serious flamboyancy with him. The Shox, while it’s design challenged perceptions, its colorways did not. But now it’s 2019, and a lot has changed in sneakers, including the shift to vibrantly-colored, expressive footwear — take the CPFM x Nike Air VaporMax 2019, for example.

Neymar debuting his Nike Shox R4 Last Month

Debuted by the Brazilan star last month (above) the pair sports an eye-popping red-to-volt/green underlay from heel to toe, overlayed by glazed on black hits, and black leather toe caps. At the toe and tongue lay metallic grey mesh — the upper portion sporting a 3M finish — with the color surfacing on a plethora of accents around the horn. Black outsole encases the bold red Shox cushioning system, while Neymar branding completes the design at the tongue and insoles.

An official release date is yet to be announced for the Neymar x Nike Shox R4, but with international retailers having already received their pairs, you can expect a release to land soon at select Stateside Swoosh stockists and Nike.com over the coming weeks. Until then, enjoy a detailed look at the offering below!

Update 05.24.19 Official looks of both pairs of Neymar’s Nike Shox R4s have just landed — along with a release date. At this stage, both pairs will be arriving on May 30th in Asia, with a Stateside drop date to follow. But with how stacked Nike’s SNKRS calendar is next week, don’t expect these to arrive the same day as Asian retailers — but definitely in the weeks to come.
