Air Force 1 “Lucha Libre” Continues Nike’s Mexican Wrestling Collection
Nike is stepping back into the ring with the second of a three-piece pack that celebrates one of the world’s most cult-followed sports. Honoring the 150-year-old Mexican tradition, the Nike Air Force 1 “Lucha Libre” continues the theme set forth by the collection’s Air Max 90 revealed back in July — and it does so in absolute flamboyance, a trademark of Mexican wrestling.
There are few things more engrained into mainstream Mexican culture than Luca Libre — Mexican wrestling — with the sport finding its way into countless pop culture arenas, Halloween costumes, and, quite frequently, adult entertainment (so I’ve been told…) It’s been a long-running feature for the nation, with its roots dating back to 1863 during the French Intervention in Mexico. It hit the local mainstream early in the 20th Century and has since been a cult-followed sport around the globe.
This Nike Air Force 1 “Lucha Libre” release honors not only the famous máscaras but also the nation in which it was founded. The latter is seen at the left and right foot’s alternate green and red patent leather Swooshes, heel embroidery, and ombre insoles. The mask inspo is a little more obvious, with audacious, oversized patent leather shrouds of metallic silver, black, red, green, and blue arranged to form a máscara. You’ll also note several Swoosh designed worked into the said mask. These are attached via a special chrome stud at the lateral ankle and rest atop an upper of mostly metallic silver. Rounding out the design is a simple white sole unit.
Retailers in Asia have listed a release for these, the aforementioned Air Max 90s, and the just-revealed Blair Mids for September 14th, though Stateside and European dates are still to be confirmed.
