25 years ago, Christian Tresser’s Air Max masterpiece was born. The sneaker’s radical combination of reflective overlays, curved lines, and metallic silver finishes anchored around the brand’s biggest Air bubble yet, was as avant grade as it got. Like many of Nike’s designs of the era, the shoe was inspired by industrial design, with Japanese bullet train influence so prevalent that its debut colorway quickly became known as the Silver Bullet. That OG offering has been the basis of many off-set colorways, from the Golden Bullets to the Swarovski-encrusted releases of years past. Now it’s served up another, with this Air Max 97 “Suede Bullet” the latest OG-inspired release to arrive.
Ditching the metallics and reflective in favor of muted mesh and suede overlays, the pair presents itself in a new, muted light. It works with warm neutrals and off-whites the further the lived-in theme, while OG-inspired two-tone outsoles, join black branding, Air supports, and liners. Though it does appear relatively reserved, there is one final, flashy inclusion; a solid 3M reflective heel pull in the rear that nods the OG’s awesome eye-catching aesthetic.
