Nike’s upcoming Space Hippie initiative is carrying the torch for the brand’s focus on future sustainability, and a big part of that is at the literal base of it all: Crater Foam. The coarse rubber is made with a blend of standard Nike foams and (at least) 15 percent recycled Nike Grind Rubber. It’s the latter’s granules that create a multi-colored finish, unlike anything we’ve seen before. Now, after surfacing on the sole of the Air Force 1, and more recently on the Nike Blazer, the sustainable finish is applied to Nike’s audacious Air, the Air Max Plus.
The key material is equipped along the full length of the outsole, but also forces its way onto the pair’s sweeping mudguard and heel overlays. All gimmicks aside, the pair’s base is a bonafide banger, with white-to-grey gradient mesh uppers — the same finish applied to the cage overlays — crisp white liners, eyelets and laces, and punch orange accents throughout. Capping off the design is a grey-to-black gradient midfoot shank, a white midsole filled with orange Air supports, and standard TN branding around the horn.
A release for the Nike Air Max Plus “Crater” is yet to be announced, so until further details arrive take a look through the official images below before heading over to our dedicated Nike page for all things that go Swoosh.
In other Nike news, the Blazer is the latest sneaker to join Nike’s upcoming “Brushstroke Swoosh” pack.
