Nike’s first-ever Air-encapsulating sneaker is revisited once more, this time in a styling far distant from its originally-intended purpose. Originally conceived as a long-distance runner, the Nike Air Tailwindmade its debut in the 1978 Honolulu Marathon, hitting the shelves the following year. It wasn’t too long after that that sneakers became a casualwear staple, and the Tailwind was one of the early adopters. Now, 41 years later, the sneaker returns in the most casual of fabrications: Denim.
The staple textile takes over the upper, arriving in split paneling. Rocking a weave that mimics the underside of the famed fabric, a dark blue piece runs from the medial side, across the toe box and stops at the lateral quarter, with a smaller, lighter piece wrapping back to the heel. It’s then overlayed by navy suede panels — a smooth piece covers the eyelets, with ultra-shaggy vintage-finished panels covering the toe and heel. The pair is then capped off with classic embellishments; Sail tongues, laces, and midsoles, along with red branding hits and black leather Swooshes and color-match rubber outsoles completes the design.
