The very-first Air-encompassing sneaker deserves to be celebrated far more than it is. In a world full of collabs and hype and “I’ll only wear what La Flame’s wearing” — the classics are rarely spoken about. One surefire way to slowly-but-surely get people onside is to deck the silhouette out in college-themed colors — and with this “Michigan” Tailwind 79 on the way, we’re tipping that the vintage sneaker will be picking up a few more fans in The Wolverine State in 2020.

This edition of the classic low-riding silhouette sports a mesh, leather, and suede construction, ditching the traditional nylon uppers in favor of a vibrant “Speed Yellow” textile. Over that comes boldly-contrasting navy suede overlays at the toe, eyelets, and heel, while softly-tumbled leather — also in navy — are found on the Swoosh and upper heel. Vintage Nike tongue tags remain prominent on the tongues, while the rear’s OG block lettering has been replaced by an embroidered version of the tongue’s cursive motif. The same logo appears again on the insoles, and the pair is complete with a time-tested white midsole/black rubber outsole combo.
