Despite stock market woes and consumer sentiment being less favorable than in other eras, NIKE, Inc. continues to display glimpses of hope for the future. Recently, the Nike Running team took to the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai to unveil a concept it's working on: running shoes made extra breathable with Radical AirFlow technology.
For the uninformed, Nike Radical AirFlow is a material innovation and new apparel and accessories line that leverages decades of research on how to help athletes stay cool to create product that ventilates like no other offering from the Swoosh. Items debuted in the realm of Nike ACG thanks to Caleb Olson, Trail Runner and Nike All Conditions Racing Department Athlete, but its application is multi-sport. Serena Williams has also worn apparel made with Radical AirFlow on the tennis court, for example.
As aforementioned, Nike Running participated in the recent import-expo in Shanghai in order to display an exciting project it's working on. (The Greater China market is very important to the Swoosh, as it's a region in which it's been struggling to maintain and grow its share; this is what makes product like the Nike Swooshfly marathon racer crucial.) Always the enthusiasts for visible tech, Chinese attendees caught a first-look at a Pegasus Plus 2 and ACG Pegasus Trail outfitted with Radical AirFlow uppers—a never-before-seen maship.
Ventilation-focused, textile uppers on running shoes aren't new—in fact, they're the name of the game—but what stands out about the samples unveiled in Shanghai is that both concepts bring a material originally developed in clothing to footwear.
Marquee Alphafly 4 and Nike Apex silhouettes have breathability in mind with their Atomknit 2.0 and Flyknit X construction, but these setups are more focused on weight-saving and containment than airflow. Radical AirFlow uppers, however, are all about channeling air to keep feet cool while still providing a canvas for strategic padding and protection.
The Swoosh hasn't disclosed any details about any of its running shoes modified with Radical AirFlow uppers, but that may change as Spring/Summer 2027 inch closer.
