Spain's LALIGA isn't interested in any online chatter about "nostalgia merchants." Instead, the football league is inviting its two top flights to participate in its first-ever Retro Matchday, a weekend-long event that'll see 38 clubs suit up in new kits inspired by iconic designs from the past.
Institutions like FC Barcelona and Real Madrid have been putting out reissues of beloved jerseys from yesteryear with the help of their longtime kit manufactures Nike and adidas, respectively, but Retro Matchday promises familiar, but new designs.
According to an official announcement, referees will also partake in the event, wearing special apparel through the RFEF’s Referees Technical Committee (CTA).
LALIGA Retro Matchday is a tangible expression of “A Living Legacy," an effort that aims to transform club history into an experience that is felt. According to the League, "These historic jerseys, reinterpreted for today’s competition, serve as a bridge between generations, connecting the origins of fandom with the way soccer is experienced today. The initiative unites soccer and fashion directly on the pitch, positioning LALIGA as the only one of Europe’s five major leagues to deliver a coordinated activation of this kind."
The event takes place during Matchday 31 of LALIGA EA SPORTS and Matchday 35 of LALIGA HYPERMOTION. Participating designs will be unveiled on Thursday, March 19, at MBFWMadrid. Clubs that are not participating include Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano, Getafe, and Real Madrid.
Stay tuned for on-pitch unveilings.
