Although the late Kobe Bryant is virtually synonymous with another sportswear giant, the Los Angeles Lakers legend began his professional career as an Adidas-sponsored athlete. From 1996 to 2002, the guard represented the Three Stripes on the NBA hardwood, helping establish the Feet You Wear line and shining the light on the brand's basketball efforts through his signature series. One silhouette from the latter group is now called the "Crazy 2," abandoning its original "Kobe 2" name.
Bryant infamously disliked the shoe, which drew inspiration from the Audi TT Roadster. Its unorthodox design seemed out-of-place in the early 2000s, and looks futuristic decades later. But the performance-basketball space has come a long way since the turn-of-the-century (check out the Converse SHAI 001 for an example).
Adidas Basketball has retrod the Crazy 2's predecessor in handfuls of different styles over the years, with the Crazy IIInfinity modernizing the team's efforts from the aughts for today's growing realm of lifestyle-oriented footwear with some performance capabilities. Bryant's last signature model with the Three Stripes, however, will return in a number of original styles throughout 2025 and beyond. A 'Silver Metallic' pair has recently surfaced via product photography, suggesting an imminent release.
The toaster-reminiscent design and shell-toe opt for a shimmering silver tone that harkens back to the past, while simultaneously nodding to the future. The metallic ensemble makes the connection to Audi's sports car that much more obvious. Nostalgic fans of the sneaker will be glad to know that the Kobe 2 retro will return with its original shoe box as well, displaying the Three Stripes' commitment to celebrating its legacy right (even if it can't use Bryant's image and likeness).
