Since August 2008, Airbnb has hosted a plethora of unique short-term lodging options on its platform. Recent history has seen the San Francisco-based company tap its extensive network of collaborators to up the ante, with its latest effort inviting four lucky guests down to Mexico City.
Why?: To experience a night at the former Estadio Azteca, widely-considered the most iconic football stadium in World Cup™ history. The overnight stay, which will take place on Sunday, April 5, will be hosted by none other than Hugo Sánchez, the former Pumas and Real Madrid star who's widely-considered the greatest Mexican footballer of all-time.
Airbnb's invitation coincides with much-needed renovations to the Mexico City-based stadium, which has been officially renamed to Estadio Banorte. The once-in-a-lifetime stay at the ever-important venue serves as yet another opportunity to build anticipation for the 2026 World Cup™, which kicks off on that pitch come Thursday, June 11, in a match between Mexico and South Africa. Selected guests will stay in two private suites within the venue, sleeping inside "El Coloso de Santa Úrsula."
"Mexico City Stadium is the heart of football in Mexico and the stage for some of the most important moments of my career," shared Sánchez, five-time LALIGA and Pichichi Trophy winner. "It is a place that commands respect, inspires and safeguards unforgettable stories. That is why I am deeply excited to know that, thanks to Airbnb, I will have the privilege of welcoming true football fans so they can experience this temple from a unique perspective. They won’t just see it from the stands: they will inhabit it, feel it and wake up in the same place where memorable chapters of our sport have been written. I was fortunate enough to experience unforgettable nights here; now it will be the fans’ turn to create their own story."
Guests will begin the unique Airbnb experience with a behind-the-scenes tour of the newly-renovated stadium with Sánchez and their guide. They'll also have a chance to experience the specially-curated "La Tribuna de Hugol" fan space designed in honor of Mexican football. Their private, VIP luxury suites overlook the pitch, delivering a breathtaking view.
Additionally, guests will enjoy meals inspired by Mexico's flavors, prepared by Airbnb private chef services. Before checking-out, they’ll be invited to personalize their own football gear with an Airbnb experience host. Lastly, winners of the Mexico City Stadium experience will receive tickets to attend the opening match on June 11.
Sign-ups for a chance to live the former Estadio Azteca go live on Monday, March 23, at 11 a.m. CST (12 p.m. EST) at airbnb.mx/hugol. Bookings are first come, first served. The experience is free for one group of four guests and takes place overnight from April 5-6.
