Last seen circa 2013, the Nike Air Penny 5 will look to make a triumphant return to retailers in 2020, with this “Blue Chips” edition that homages Penny’s silver screen debut surfacing online earlier this morning.
A genuine hybrid model, Nike resurrected the Air Penny line in back 2012 by debuting this Marc Dolce-designed silhouette. It equips itself with design elements from classic Penny signature shoes past, including a leather upper with a Foamposite overlays, Phylon midsoles, an Air Sole unit in the heel, Zoom Air unit in the forefoot and “1 Cent” branding on the tongue and back heel. Now it’s back to celebrate the 1994 film in which he starred opposite Shaquille O’Neal. The colors, of course, represent the unis of the fictional Western University Dolphins, in which Neon Boudeaux and Butch McRae (Shaq and Penny) are star players. The movie is utter garbage, but it has gone on to inspire a handful of sneaker releases over the years, with the latest here before you.
Pairs are set to release on the day of the film’s 26th anniversary, February 18th, 2020, at select stores like Finish Line and Foot Locker. A price point is yet to be determined, so until such news flows through, enjoy a first look at the pair below.
