Nike has quietly introduced a new system to its SNKRS platform, one that could reshape how sneaker releases are handled going forward. Called SNKRS Reserve, the program allows users to pre-order select sneakers ahead of their release date — essentially locking in pairs before they’ve even gone into production.
The system was put into practice today, August 24th (Kobe Day), with the Nike Kobe 3 Protro “Christmas.” Instead of the usual frantic release-day drop, fans were able to reserve their pair early through SNKRS. Once reserved, Nike will produce the sneakers and ship them at a later date, offering a smoother path to secure highly sought-after releases.
According to Nike’s rollout guide, SNKRS Reserve is designed to “make the best production decisions” while providing consumers guaranteed access to exclusive products. The process is simple: claim a reservation, pay upfront, and wait for the shoes to be manufactured and shipped. While this eliminates some of the unpredictability of traditional drops, availability is still limited, with one reservation allowed per account.
It remains to be seen how widespread this system will become, but using the Kobe 3 “Christmas” as the debut test run sends a strong message. With demand for Kobe sneakers at an all-time high, Nike may have found a way to better manage hype while ensuring fans have a more reliable chance to purchase.
Expect more details on SNKRS Reserve to emerge as Nike continues to refine the system. For now, sneaker fans should stay tuned to the app for future Reserve opportunities.
