DTLR x New Balance 997 “Greek Gods” Tells the Epic Story of Perseus and Medusa
thisneverthat, Stray Rats, Aime Leon Dore, Casablanca, YCMC, Joe Freshgoods, Ronnie Fieg, Levi’s; New Balance’s catalog of collaborative partners for 2020 is already LOADED. So why not add another? And while we’re at it, make it a two-piece. This time around its DTLR’s turn to tweak the 997 and the 997 Sport, turning the screws to tell an age-old tale of Perseus and Medusa from Greek Mythology, fittingly dubbed the DTLR x New Balance “Greek Gods Pack”.
The pack’s 997 tributes the Grecian hero’s kill-or-be-killed mission set out for him by King Polydectes. He must have had ice in his veins to tackle a mission to kill the Gorgon Medusa, which is represented in the pair’s stone-cold black and grey suede base. Nodding the hero’s polished shield used to kill the sleeping Gorgon is a reflective 3M trimming along the midfoot and collar. Given their snakeskin construction, the profile N motifs serve as a stand-in for Medusa’s severed head.
Although absent of serpent skin finishes, the 997S represents the snake-haired ice-cold bitch that was Medusa — again arriving in black and grey suedes. It does, however, represent her rivaling blood types, with a healing teal blue present along the forefoot and collar and a warning electric yellow over the laces and trimming. The tongue and upper overlay arrive in an unexpected dark plum which, when hitting the right light, changes ever-so-slightly into blues and greens. Both pairs are capped off with crisp white ENCAP sole units boasting grey tread underfoot.
The DTLR x New Balance “Greek Gods” collaboration is locked in for an April 17th release exclusively on DTLR.com.
